DePaul University's Sheena Erete to discuss tech solutions to social issues at STEMinar March 15

Learn how technology is designed and used to address social, cultural and economic issues in marginalized communities during "Taking an Assets-Based Approach to Designing Socio-Technical Solutions with Resource-Constrained Communities," a STEMinar lecture, at 7 p.m. Friday, March 15, in the Health and Science Center, Room 1234, at the College of DuPage Glen Ellyn campus, 425 Fawell Blvd.

The event is free and open to the public.

DePaul University's Sheena Erete will discuss problem solving in resourced-constrained communities by focusing on the human, environmental, social, and economic capital that can be leveraged in design. She is currently researching how various Chicago communities use technologies to address the issues of violence, education and economic development, to help determine new socio-cultural technology designs that encourage collaborate pro-social behavior.

An assistant professor and researcher in the College of Computing and Digital Media at DePaul University and Co-Director of the Technology for Social Good Research and Design Lab, Erete earned bachelor's degrees in computer science and mathematics from Spelman College, a master's degree in computer science focusing on human-computer interaction for Georgia Institute of Technology, and a doctorate in computer science and communication from Northwestern University.

The STEMinar Series at College of DuPage consists of free talks covering a variety of topics related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math throughout the fall and spring semesters. Upcoming STEMinars include "Songs from the Stellar Graveyard: Probing the Cosmos in Gravitational Waves," by Northwestern University's Shane L. Larson, at 7 p.m. Friday, April 5.

The college's STEM offerings continue April 27 at the fourth annual STEMCON, an interactive, family-based celebration of all things STEM. The free event features a broad range of activities and events, including expert speakers, hands-on experiences and exhibits, and STEM experts.

The goal of STEM at College of DuPage is to enhance the quality of STEM instructional and outreach programs and to help current and future students prepare for careers in STEM fields. COD offers a broad range of academic programs designed to provide students with the educational background and training needed to successfully pursue an advanced degree or career in STEM.
