See all-female Hurricane Saxophone Quartet at Barrington's White House

Barrington's White House is pleased to welcome the Hurricane Saxophone Quartet alongside saxophone soloist Jan Baker at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 17.

As one of the country's premiere professional saxophone ensembles, the all-female, Chicago-based Hurricane Saxophone Quartet crosses stylistic boundaries, playing classical, jazz and contemporary. These four women combine their considerable talents and have been featured in classical recitals, community and cultural festivals, radio, TV and even at hometown Chicago Bulls games.

All graduates of Northwestern University, the quartet will also welcome special guest attendee Dr. Frederick L. Hemke, renowned American virtuoso classical saxophonist and Eckstein Professor Emeritus of Music at Northwestern University.

The concert is shared with saxophone soloist Jan Baker, D. Mus., Lyric Opera. An advocate of new music, Baker is co-artistic director and saxophonist with Atlanta-based new music ensemble Bent Frequency. She has commissioned and premiered numerous works by distinguished and cutting-edge composers and has won national and international grants to fund the creation, performance and recording of new music.

As an orchestral saxophonist, Baker regularly performs with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Grant Park Orchestra, Chicago Philharmonic, Atlanta Opera and Atlanta Ballet and has appeared with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Joffrey Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Chicago Chamber Players, and American Ballet Theatre.

"We are looking forward to welcoming the Hurricane Saxophone Quartet, Dr. Jan Baker, and Dr. Frederick Hemke, one of the world's pre-eminent saxophonists and renowned in classical music circles," said Rollin Potter, Barrington's White House cultural director. "These musicians are extraordinarily talented, and this concert promises to be full of energy and excitement, featuring works by J.S. Bach, Rossini, John Lennon and Amy Beach."
