League of Women Voters sets dates for local candidate forums

The League of Women Voters of Central Kane County is hosting candidate forums before the April 2 consolidated election for local races. Its aim is to provide residents with an opportunity to ask questions and get to know the people running for office in their communities.

• It will begin with a Batavia candidate forum at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Batavia City Hall, 100 N. Island Ave. Candidates for Batavia Public Library board, Batavia Unit District 101 board, and contested aldermanic wards have been invited to participate in this forum.

• The Aurora Committee of League of Women Voters of Central Kane County will host three candidate forums in March. All forums will be held at 7 p.m. at the Aurora Police Department, 1200 E. Indian Trail Road. The forum for candidates for 1st Ward/At Large Seat will be Tuesday, March 5. The candidate forum for the 5th and 6th Wards will be Wednesday, March 13. Candidate forum for Aurora's 8th Ward will be Monday, March 18.

• The Geneva candidate forum will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, at the Geneva Middle School North, 1357 Viking Drive. Candidates for Geneva Public Library board, Geneva Unit District 304 board, and the contested aldermanic wards 2, 4 and 5 have been invited to participate in this forum.

• Candidates for St. Charles Unit District 303 school board and St. Charles city council have been invited to a forum at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 14. The school board candidates are running for three 4-year terms and one two-year term. The only contested St. Charles city council race will be in Ward 2. The forum will be held in Wiley Hall on the lower level of Baker Memorial United Methodist Church, 307 Cedar Ave., St. Charles.

• A Sugar Grove candidate forum will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at the Sugar Grove Community Building, 141 S. Main St. Candidates for Sugar Grove Village Board, Waubonsee Community College Board and Sugar Grove Fire Protection District board will participate in this forum.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, issue-oriented organization which never endorses candidates. As part of its Voter Education mission, they sponsor forums prior to every election so that candidates seeking to serve the local communities may present their views directly to voters in an open, unbiased setting. The league also asks community access cable television to videotape the proceedings for rebroadcast before the election.
