Wheeling Township Food Pantry Reopens After Four-Month Renovation

The Wheeling Township Food Pantry underwent an expansion and revitalization over the past several months, which increased its size by more than 30 percent, and thereby expanded options for residents who utilize the pantry on a monthly basis. An increase in personal essentials and food donations by generous township residents and organizations led to the renovation. Fortunately, the pantry was able to continue to assist clients in need during the entire process.

As a result of these improvements, residents in need will now have access to a wider selection of foods. Another benefit of the larger space is that the township now has the ability to offer more personal essentials and paper products - items for which the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits cannot be used. SNAP provides a monthly supplement for eligible low-income individuals so that they may purchase nutritious food.

"As we saw donations to the food pantry consistently increase, we realized that we needed to accommodate this growth through improvements, which were made possible by a number of generous community organizations," said Wheeling Township Supervisor Kathleen Penner. "We are so thankful to all of our neighbors who are so willing to help others in need."

Various community organizations contributed to the expansion of the pantry, including the Greater Chicago Food Depository and the Arlington Heights Rotary Club (Sunset). Substantial food donations are consistently made to the pantry by the Arlington Heights Rotary Club (Noon) and Arlington Pediatrics. Wheeling Township is grateful for the unwavering dedication of all of these organizations.

The Wheeling Township Food Pantry operates as a "Client Choice" model, which was established in 2012. This concept allows clients to choose foods they like (and will eat) in a respectful, grocery store-like setting. This model helps to eliminate waste, due to clients being able to personally select items they will consume, or can use, due to dietary needs.

The Food Pantry opened 50 years ago in 1969, and is run almost entirely by volunteers. One township employee supervises more than 40 dedicated volunteers, who sort, stock and replenish items, and guide clients through the shopping process.

Though they cannot personally name everyone, Wheeling Township greatly appreciates the generous donations made by hundreds of private individuals, organizations and businesses, many of whom donate on a monthly basis.
