Fremont Middle School Holds Community Service Night

Fremont Middle School welcomed staff, students and their families for a Community Service Night February 12 to benefit a variety of local organizations.

The event was a culmination of planning by teams of teachers and students. National Junior Honor Society, Student Council, and Service Club served as the evening's student ambassadors, volunteering in various parts of the building during the event.

Sixth-graders held a drive for the animal rescue group Reach Rescue, while also bringing in supplies and making quilts for infants. Seventh-graders participated in a Band-Aid and toy drive, while creating greeting cards for patients at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital. Additionally, the group hosted a guest speaker, Jack Czapla. Jack is an eighth-grader at Carl Sandburg in Mundelein who spoke about his time at Lurie's and the importance of giving back.

NJHS and the eighth grade hosted a book drive for Bernie's Book Bank while also designing and constructing bookmarks. The groups also provided child care for younger siblings. Related Studies and PE held a canned food drive for Fremont Township Food Pantry and held fun participatory challenges for families in the gymnasium.

Money also was raised for Reach Rescue by selling Culver's frozen custard, as well as t-shirts featuring the mission for the night, "Believe There is Good in the World."

"These types of events are important at Fremont Middle School, as they demonstrate to students the importance of giving back to the community," said seventh-grade teacher Emily Loerakker, who was one of the lead organizers of the event. "They also support our District vision of focusing on whole child development and collaborative practice. The activity created a culture of kindness for our students and their parents as they felt, firsthand, the benefit of working together to give back to those in need."
