CLC Music department announces seven spring 2019 concerts

College of Lake County musicians will present seven concerts this spring that feature music that appeals to a variety of tastes. From swinging jazz and soothing classical instrumental works to delightful modern choral pieces and inspirational gospel songs, each concert is programmed to include crowd pleasers that also challenge the ensembles' students and community members.

"CLC's ten ensembles are loaded with talent and I encourage all local music lovers to take advantage of the opportunity to hear excellent live music, performed in a beautiful theatre for a very low price," said Dr. Michael Flack, Music department chair.

42nd Annual Guest Artist Concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 3 featuring legendary trumpeter Dan Fornero and the Monday and Tuesday Night Jazz Ensembles. A Kenosha, Wis. native, Fornero has toured the world playing lead trumpet with Woody Herman, Tom Jones, the Brian Setzer Orchestra, Johnny Hallyday, Phil Collins, Neil Diamond and Mumford & Sons, among others.

With Fornero, the Monday Night band, under the direction of Dr. Michael Flack, will play a program that includes "On Purple Porpoise Parkway," composed by Tom Kubis and "Basie, Straight Ahead," composed by Sammy Nestico. Other selections include: "The Auckland Strut," composed by Wally Minko; "Erin's Waltz," composed by Jeff Bunnell; "Saying Goodbye," composed by Les Hooper; and "Spot On (With Grilled Onions)," composed by John Sturino.

The Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble, directed by John Mose, will perform songs including: "Moanin'," composed by Bobby Timmons; "Moose The Mooche," composed by Charlie Parker; "Stars Fell on Alabama," composed by Frank Perkins; "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," composed by Wallace Willis; and "Big Swing Face," composed by Bill Potts.

A master class with Fornero, free and open to the public, will take place at noon Saturday, March 2 in Room P101 at the Grayslake Campus.

Wind Ensemble, Sunday, March 10 and Sunday, May 5, both at 4 p.m. The 50-member Wind Ensemble is an auditioned group composed of students and community members conducted by Dr. Michael Flack. The March 10 concert is a tribute to Americana, featuring songs such as "An Armed Forces Medley" and "America, The Beautiful." Other songs include: "An

Outdoor Overture," composed by Aaron Copland; "Shine," composed by Julie Giroux; "American Salute," composed by Morton Gould; and many other popular musical themes inspired by American composers.

Gospel Choir Concert, Saturday, April 6 at 4 p.m. Clap along to a spirited selection of gospel songs and spirituals by the Gospel Choir and special guest musicians, under the direction of Matthew Hunter.

Spring Jazz Ensemble Concert, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. Enjoy a variety of lively big band jazz charts performed by the Monday Night Jazz Ensemble and the Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble.

Spring Choral Concert, Saturday, May 11 at 4 p.m. CLC's four choirs will perform songs of spring. Selections include: Gabriel Fauré's "Cantique de Jean Racine," Frank Ticheli's "Earth Song," and Josquin de Pres' "El Grillo." The CLC Singers, Choir of Lake County and Chamber Singers are directed by Ingrid Mikolajczyk. The Gospel Choir also will perform under the direction of Matthew Hunter.

Jazz Combos: Monday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m. Two combos, directed by John Mose and David Jennings, will present a free concert in Room P101.

Concert Band Concert, Wednesday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. The 60-member Concert Band, directed by John Mose, will perform a wide range of band music, from classic marches and symphonic pieces to Broadway medleys and film scores.

Concerts are held in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the CLC Grayslake Campus. Ticket prices range from $6 to $10, with a $1 discount for CLC students/staff and seniors. Instrumental music concerts are free to students under age 18. Due to the quiet nature of many songs, choral concerts are not appropriate for children under age 3.
