Northwest Symphony to perform in concert

The Northwest Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of conductor Tim Semanik, will present a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, in the theater at Forest View Education Center, 2121 S. Goebbert Road, Arlington Heights.

The concert is being held in partnership with the Northwest Suburban High School District 214 Community Education Program. The program will feature:

• Chadwick: Symphonic Sketches: "Jubilee"

• Barber: Essay for Orchestra no 1, Op. 12

• Copland: "An Outdoor Overture"

• Hanson: Symphony No. 2, Op. 30 "Romantic"

The concert opens with "Jubilee," the first of the "Symphonic Sketches" by George Whitefield Chadwick.

Samuel Barber's "Essay for Orchestra. No. 1" abandons the structural dictates of earlier music in the classical genre, instead exploring its serious melody in the thoughtful manner of an essay. Written in response to an invitation by the great conductor Arturo Toscanini, it presents its subject, a melody of dramatic character, at the outset, then explores it through different sections of the orchestra.

"An Outdoor Overture," by Aaron Copland, is one of the most popular works by the American composer. Ebullient, bright, and optimistic, its ongoing popularity attests to its appeal to audiences.

Howard Hanson's Symphony No. 2, "Romantic," presents an intense melody in the first movement, then quotes it in widely contrasting forms in the remaining three movements.

Individual concert ticket prices are $20 (adults), $15 (seniors), $10 (students) and free for children younger than 14 when accompanied by a paying adult.

Tickets will be available at the door on concert days and may be purchased by cash, check or credit card. To purchase tickets in advance, call the Forest View box office at (847) 718-7702. For information, call the Northwest Symphony Orchestra at (847) 965-7271.
