Aurora Navy League to learn about training recruits Feb. 19

"How We Transform a Young High School Graduate into a U.S. Navy Sailor in 8 Weeks" will be discussed at Aurora Navy League Council 247's monthly dinner meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Grandma's Table Restaurant, 1700 Douglas Road in Montgomery.

The speaker will be Lt. Peter Besser, U.S. Naval Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes.

Lt. Besser will speak after a reception at 5:15 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. Dinner entrees are fish, chicken, or beef, soup, salad, dinner rolls, vegetables, dessert, and nonalcoholic drink. The cost is $20. A dinner- salad entree is $12.

The Chicago native is a 2012 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He has served in a diverse range of sea and shore assignments.

He reports to the USS Pearl Harbor where he leads a team of senior enlisted in the eight-week transformation of civilians to basically trained sailors ready to enter the fleet. He is also a graduate student at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University.

A Surface Warfare Officer, he is a "plankowner" (member of the original crew) of the San Antonio Class amphibious transport dock, the USS Arlington. His sea service since 2012 includes assignments aboard the USS Arlington, USS Mustin, USS George Washington, USS Ronald Reagan and the Japanese Naval ship IZUMO, deployed to the Western Pacific.

Additionally, he has been the ship's officer for the barracks and training facilities with USS Chicago and USS Arizona.
