Libertyville Junior Girl Scouts earn the Bronze Award

Eight Libertyville 10 year old Junior Girl Scouts from troop 40208 earned their Bronze award. The Bronze award is the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can earn. (Cadettes can earn their Silver award and Seniors can earn Gold). The Girl Scout Bronze Award recipients must devote at least 20 hours to their projects and represent what the girl scout law stands for while making the world a better place. They first must earn one of the Journey awards which the girl accomplished the year prior based on learning the power of change within one person, a team and a community.

Troop members, Marley Herchenbach Ric, Kelsey Leatherwood, Rebecca Liu, Madison Reichard, Maia Solomon, Lucy Tyll, Lucy Van Brunt and Finley Weinstein decided that the honey bees and Monarch butterflies were in need of their help. After many hours over several months the girls made over one thousand seed balls full of several thousand milk weed and flowering seeds. Milkweed is the only plant monarchs lay their eggs on and the flowers will help the honey bees survive. The Libertyville girls helped these creatures in our community while the same time making it beautiful by helping spread these necessary plants. The girls also plan to help educate younger children into the importance of honey bees and the difference between bees and wasps.

Troop leader of four years, Sue Jacobs, states "Girls Scouts are not just cookies. These girls are willing to try new things with their courage and bravery, help people and the community in amazing ways and they are willing to get dirty to do it."
