Holy Cross volleyball teams raise funds for Ava Warriors Foundation

The Holy Cross Catholic School girls volleyball teams in fifth through eighth grade hosted its inaugural "Spike Out Cancer" night on Monday, Oct. 29, with all proceeds benefiting the Ava Warriors Foundation.

The "Spike Out Cancer Night" raised $4,123 with the admission, T-shirt sales, 50/50 raffle and concessions.

Ava Olson was a member of the Holy Cross Class of 2021. In November 2016, the then 9-year-old was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), which is a very aggressive and difficult to treat brain tumor found at the base of the brain. She lost a courageous battle to cancer on May of 2017.

The Ava Warriors Foundation has been established to help support families affected by childhood cancer and to join forces with the DIPG community to sponsor promising research for the treatment of this complex and terrible cancer that has no cure and an average life expectancy of 9 months from diagnosis.

The Ava Warriors Foundation also awarded three scholarships to Holy Cross Catholic School students for the 2018-19 school year.
