McHenry County Department of Health offers no-cost diabetes prevention class

The McHenry County Department of Health is offering a no-cost Type 2 diabetes prevention program starting in mid-January.

To find out if this class would be right for you, attend an overview session at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17; 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27; or 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3.

The class will meet on Tuesdays or Thursdays at McHenry County Department of Health, 2200 N. Seminary Ave., Woodstock.

Carol Waggoner, a registered nurse health educator for the health department's community health program, received lifestyle coach training from the American Association of Diabetes Educators.

Based on a model developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this class is designed specifically to help prevent Type 2 diabetes. The National Diabetes Prevention Program is designed for people who have pre-diabetes or are at risk for Type 2 diabetes, but who do not already have the condition.

According to Waggoner, "The National Diabetes Prevention Program makes it easier for people with pre-diabetes to participate in affordable, high-quality lifestyle change programs, reducing their risk of Type 2 diabetes and improving their overall health. I'm excited to teach this class, which follows the CDC curriculum and is founded on research, in our county."
