Algonquin library offers hobby groups, book clubs and more

It's no secret: community happens at the library and through library programs! Many discussion groups, book clubs, and hobby gatherings at the Algonquin Area Public Library provide opportunities for people to explore and learn together. There are new groups starting all the time! See what groups are talking about this winter and get in on the conversation. Note, some groups require registration.

Adult book clubs

Stop by the adult services desk with any questions or to pick up a copy of the book to be discussed. The clubs are for ages 18 years and older unless otherwise noted.

• "Forever Young: A Young Adult Book Club" meets at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of the month at Eastgate Branch. This month, they will discuss "Loving vs. Virginia" by Patricia Hruby Powell. Contact Karrie Stewart.

• "Pages at the Projects" meets from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Harnish Main Library. On Feb. 20, it is "And Then There Were None" by Agatha Christie, a classic whodunit mystery. Earns $50 Book Bucks.

• "Night Readers" meets at 7 p.m. on the third Thursdays at Harnish Main Library. Contact Patty Pearsall

• "Cozy Corner," a new book club for cozy mystery fans, age 14 or older, meets from 7 to 8 p.m. first Wednesday of the month at Harnish Main Library. On March 6, the theme will be "Doggies in Danger!: Contact Lindsey Tomsu.

• "Book Clubbers" at 7 p.m. on first Thursday of the month at the Harnish Main Library. The next program will be March 7. Contact Patty Pearsall.

• "Spinecrackers" at 10 a.m. on the first Friday of the month at the Harnish Main Library. The next program will be March 1. Contact Elena Feiza.

Book clubs for kids

• "Cover-to-Cover" Youth Book Club meets at 7 p.m. on the second Thursdays Harnish Main Library. Registration is required. On Feb. 14, they will discuss a variety of fun books. Contact Heather Swanson.

• "Pageturners" Youth Book Club meets at 7 p.m. on the second Thursdays at Harnish Main Library. Registration is required. The next meeting will be Feb. 14. Contact Kimberly Damitz.

Hobby clubs

• "Worth 1,000 Words" camera club for photographers, age 14 and up, meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, at the Harnish Main Library. Registration is required. Amateur and expert photographers are welcome to learn, discuss and practice photography from basic tips to pro tricks and do-it-yourself photo hacks. Compare and critique photos taken with different equipment, settings and techniques.

Special interest

• "Creativity Cafe," the Algonquin Area Writers Group for writers 18 and up, meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at Harnish Main Library.

Aspiring authors, beginners to advanced, are invited to join a diverse group of local writers. Contact Virginia Donahue.

• "Critique," the Algonquin Area Writers Group for writers 18 and up, meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 and March 28, at Harnish Main Library. Writers can use this time for writing, small group critique or to present a workshop. Contact Virginia Donahue.

• "Keeping It Reel," a discussion group for film lovers, age 18 and up, meets from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of the month at Eastgate Branch. Registration is required. On Feb. 28, the movie will be the 1980 romantic fantasy film "Somewhere in Time." On March 28, it will be the 2002 film "Equilibrium." Copies of the film will be available for checkout. • Animangiacs: Anime & Manga Fan Group for fans, 18 or older, meets from 6 to 8 p.m. on the second Tuesdays of the month at Eastgate Branch Library.
