U-46 to host parent workshop on race and equity

Elgin Area School District U-46 will host a parent workshop on race and equity from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Elgin Community College.

National speaker Rick Wormeli, one of the first National Board Certified Teachers, will address parents on the importance of building a climate where students, staff, and families can reflect upon personal and systemic biases to foster environments conducive to productive discussions on racism and equity.

Wormeli is an educator with more than 39 years of experience. He brings innovation, energy, validity, and high standards to both his presentations and his instructional practice. Wormeli, known for his substantive presentations, sense of humor, and unconventional approaches, has been asked to present to teachers, administrators, and parents in all 50 states, Canada, China, Europe, Thailand, Japan, Vietnam, Korea, Australia, the Middle East and at the White House.

"Because our district has a vibrant and diverse population, building a climate where we can have positive conversations about racism and equity is very important," said Deputy Superintendent of Instruction Dr. Suzanne Johnson. "This discussion is an opportunity for parents to reflect and consider how we can collaborate to ensure equitable opportunities for all students."

The workshop will be held at Elgin Community College, Building E, Seigle Auditorium, 1700 Spartan Drive.
