Signal Hill, NSDAR Honors Veterans In Many Ways

The Signal Hill, NSDAR, Chapter of Barrington, celebrated the service and sacrifice of our nation's veterans in several ways this past Veterans Day weekend.

On Thursday evening, November 8, 2018, members of the chapter volunteered their time and baking talents to assist in The Community Meal honoring all veterans. The meal, free to all who participated, was provided through the ongoing efforts of The Community Meal, a 501(c) (3) organization, founded by Mary Sandner. Her vision is to bring the residents of Barrington together to not only share a meal, but also share real experiences, real conversations, and real problems, providing companionship and a sense of community. The Signal Hill Chapter presented Ms. Sandner with their Community Service Award for her ongoing efforts to make a difference in the lives of the people in her community. On Friday, November 9th, members of the chapter attended a service at the Village Hall of Barrington, organized by VFW Post 7706, honoring attendees and remembering those lost in World War I. Veterans who attended answered roll call, by branch, and gave a brief account of their service. Musicians played the various branches' musical themes, and remarks were made by the Village President, along with other notables.

In conjunction with Ela Public Library, Signal Hill sponsored acclaimed historian and speaker, Barry Bradford on Sunday, November 11th. Mr. Bradford gave a ninety minute historical overview of the First World War, the politics and mood of the country at that time, and postulated about post war conditions and events that seemed to be the consequences of the end of the Great War. Open to the public, the event was well attended by DAR members, library patrons, and individuals interested in the topic.

The Signal Hill Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, raises funds throughout the year and distributes to 501 (c) (3) organizations, whose missions support DAR's mission of education, historic preservation, patriotism, conservation, and Native American issues. The chapter was founded in 1972, and is dedicated to preserving history, promoting patriotism, conservation and historic awareness in our community, and securing America's future through better education for children. Membership is established through approval of documentation of direct lineage from an American Revolutionary War Patriot.
