Turkey Fest to support Coats for Kids program in Aurora

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Aurora recently delivered more than 1,700 new winter coats to Aurora public schools as part of the Coats for Kids program sponsored by the city, Communities in Schools and the Kiwanis Club of Aurora.

The program is coordinated with social workers in each school to identify those children who need a coat.

Communities in Schools is planning a fundraiser in support of this year's Coats for Kids program.

Turkey Fest will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Mike & Denise's Pizzeria and Pub, 1760 N. Farnsworth Ave., Aurora. Turkey Fest will feature frozen turkey bowling and raffles for turkeys and other prizes.

Ticket booklets are $25 each and include a pizza buffet and 20 "Gobbler Bucks" that can be used to enter the raffles.

For tickets or sponsorship opportunities, call Anna Toole at Communities in Schools, (630) 692-9524.

The Coats for Kids program began under the guidance of Aldermen Scheketa Hart-Burns and Juany Garza.

In 2010, Kiwanis President Archie Needam worked to expand the program to be a citywide event.

Since that time, Coats for Kids - Aurora has evolved into a program supported by Communities in Schools, the Kiwanis Club of Aurora, the City of Aurora, the business community, and caring individuals.
