Elgin Ikes offer program on nutrient runoff, water quality Oct. 2

On Tuesday, Oct. 2, the Elgin Chapter of the Izaak Walton League will offer a program by Tim Wagner, the Ikes' national agriculture outreach coordinator, during the monthly meeting.

Wagner, of Decorah, Iowa, will give a short slide presentation and address policies dealing with agriculture and conservation. The program will cover the federal farm bill and Illinois' current efforts to reduce nutrient runoff in the state's rivers and lakes.

Both of these issues have direct bearing on water quality, habitats, fish and wildlife populations, and the preservation of outdoor recreation opportunities for current and future generations. Learn why your voice is important and easy steps you can take to make a difference.

The program starts at 7 p.m. at the Izaak Walton Center, 899 Jay St., Elgin. Visit www.iwla.org/elgin or www.facebook.com/izaakwaltonleagueelginchapter/.

The Elgin Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America is a defender of soil, air, waters, and wildlife. The chapter, known as the "Elgin Ikes," was established in 1931. Volunteers introduce youth and families to conservation, outdoor recreation, and land ethics by building nature trails, restoring stream banks, monitoring and "cleaning" creeks, planting trees, and eliminating invasive species.

They sponsor both a Cub Pack and Boy Scout Troop. The Lodge is near the confluence of Willow and Poplar creeks. Meetings and programs are held at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month at the Hanover Township Izaak Walton Center.
