Altrusa Club of Elgin gives back to community agencies
The Altrusa International Club of Elgin welcomed leaders from seven local nonprofit organizations which the club has supported this past year to its Sept. 20 meeting.
Altrusa president Kathy Canny recognized the strong emphasis of service and support to the community by the club's members.
"We are honored to continue our work in providing assistance to our local not-for-profit agencies," Canny said. "Altrusa stands for a combination of 'altruistic and USA' to solidify the bonds of giving back."
A total of $3,000 was distributed this year. Proceeds went to: books for the autism program at the Association for Individual Development; Elgin Community College Foundation Scholarship program's Purses with a Purpose; Elgin Partnership for Early Learning's "Language in the Laundromat" program; books for Greater Elgin Family Care Center; learning supplies for Hamilton Wings; The Literacy Connection; and a learning carpet for the YWCA Elgin.
The donations are supported and funded by the Altrusa International Foundation of Elgin, Illinois, Inc. with Bridget Ranieri as president and Joanna Wester, treasurer.
The Elgin club was founded in October 1946 by a group of business and professional women.
In May 2015, the club received an award from the Elgin Heritage Commission for its 50+ years of service as a civic organization promoting literacy, community health, and education in the community.
