CLC's Lakeshore Campus offers free child care program

The Children's Learning Center at the College of Lake County's Lakeshore (Waukegan) Campus will provide free child care for children ages 3 to 5 beginning Oct. 15 for a nine-month term as a part of the Preschool for All program for Lake County families who qualify.

Funded by a federal grant, the program will offer a full academic school day that will focus on developing a child's social and emotional skills, self-regulation skills, physical development and the cognitive skills needed for kindergarten.

Qualifying parents or guardians bring their children to the Lakeshore Campus from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, Oct. 15 to June 30, 2019.

To qualify, a family must satisfy need-based criteria such as, but not limited to, one of the following: led by a single parent or guardian; one or both parents/guardians are military veterans; family income is at or below poverty level or the family is receiving aid such as Women, Infants and Children assistance. The Preschool for All program also will have a family engagement component that will provide parents with resources and tools to continue the learning processes at home.

The Preschool for All program is led by certified teachers in a classroom dedicated solely to the program. Applicants must reside in Lake County, but do not have to be CLC students, according to Jennifer Porreca, coordinator of the Lakeshore Campus' Children's Learning Center.

To enroll, call the center at (847) 543-2190 and attend an one-hour open enrollment session between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Oct. 5. Spots are filled as first come, first served for those who meet criteria.
