St. Vincent de Paul to host 11th annual Run/Walk for the Poor Sept. 29

St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Mary Catholic Church in Huntley, along with St. Catherine Catholic Church in West Dundee, will host its 11th annual Run/Walk For The Poor Saturday, Sept. 29, in downtown Huntley for the first time.

In previous years, this event has raised more than $150,000 to assist members of the community who suffer financial hardship due to illness, accident, loss of job, domestic abuse, or other life-changing circumstances.

In the last five years, St. Mary's Vincent de Paul Society has provided more than $700,000 to keep families' electricity, gas or water from being shut off.

Other accomplishments include assisting families to keep their car running for work commutes and to pay for much needed medicine. At Christmas, the St. Vincent de Paul Society Giving Tree distributes gifts to more than 400 families in need. Throughout the year, the society provides food through a monthly food drive.

You can help continue this good work by registering for the walk/run or by donating at raceroster.com/19303.

With the help of the Village of Huntley and Parkside Pub, this year's event will take place for the first time in the heart of downtown Huntley, starting and finishing at Parkside Pub, 11721 E. Main St.

Three raffle prizes will be available to win: a golf package (rounds of golf at five courses); a family package of 10 worthwhile items, including tickets to Six Flags Great America; or a dinner for six in your home prepared by a gourmet chef.

This timed event will include a moderate course through Huntley neighborhoods for runners and walkers of all skill levels. First- and second-place awards will be provided to runners by age group. All adult registrants will get a T-shirt, race-day snacks and a ticket for an after-race raffle. All participants under age 15 will get a participation ribbon and a Culver's ice cream coupon. The cost of registration is $25 for age 15 or older, and free for age 14 or younger.
