Glenbard Parent Series to host 3 sessions about positive brain power

The Glenbard Parent Series Navigating Healthy Families will present two days with international speaker and psychotherapist Tina Payne Bryson, focusing on brain-informed parenting to develop a student's "yes brain" for nurturing children who thrive. She will outline the strategies to strengthen emotional, academic and social skills, to help move teens from negative emotions like stress and disappointment to positivity and an engaged approach to life.

Bryson will give the following three presentations:

• "The Yes Brain: The Success Brain" will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Glenbard South, 23W200 Butterfield Road in Glen Ellyn. When facing challenges, unpleasant tasks, and the resolution of issues such as homework, and screen-time limits, teens often act out or shut down. One constructive approach is for parents to guide their children to a "yes brain" mindset, which will lead to characteristics such as emotional regulation, resilience, personal insight, curiosity, independence and empathy. Based on her best-selling book "The Yes Brain" (co-authored with Dan Siegel), Bryson will discuss ways to encourage positive thinking and strategies for creating opportunities that allow students to succeed.

• "No Drama Discipline/The Whole Brain Child Early Childhood Workshop" for age 3 to 10 will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Marquardt School District 15 administration center, 1860 Glen Ellyn Road in Glendale Heights. Your toddler throws a tantrum in the middle of a store. Your preschooler refuses to get dressed. Your fifth-grader sulks on the bench instead of playing on the field. Children don't conspire to make their parents' lives endlessly challenging, it's just their developing brain calling the shots. Bryson will demystify the meltdowns and aggravation and explain the new science of how a child's brain is wired and how it matures.

• "The Yes Brain: The Success Brain" will be at noon Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Marquardt School District 15 administration center, 1860 Glen Ellyn Road in Glendale Heights. This program is a repeat of the 7 p.m. program on Tuesday, Sept. 25. Bryson is co-author with Dan Siegel of the New York Times bestsellers "The Whole Brain Child" and "No-Drama Discipline." Join us when Bryson will apply scientific insights offered in a way that's clear and immediately helpful so adults can better connect with children. Participants will learn about how kids' (and their own) brains work, informing how they help young people deal with everyday struggles, balance their emotions, make good choices and enjoy better relationships.
