Sheriff sponsors Safety Saturday in Wheaton

The DuPage County Sheriff's Office will sponsor a free event called Safety Saturday on Sept. 15 with an eye toward increasing public awareness about safety and promoting positive interaction among emergency service organizations and residents.

Activities will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. near the sheriff's office at the DuPage County Fairgrounds, 2015 Manchester Road, Wheaton.

All divisions of the sheriff's office, as well as many municipal police departments, fire departments and military organizations, will sponsor exhibits.

The sheriff's Special Operations Unit will run an obstacle course for kids and have all its specialty vehicles on display. The sheriff's police dog unit and hazardous devices unit will conduct demonstrations and the department's Humvee and armored personnel carrier will be on hand.

Visitors also will be able to check out DEA and Superior Ambulance helicopters that will land at the grounds between 11 a.m. and noon.

Shuttle buses will be provided to take visitors to the nearby county jail and crime laboratory, where tours will be provided throughout the day. The buses also will take visitors to the Fall Festival at the DuPage County Convalescent Center on the other side of County Farm Road.
