Five productions slated for new CLC Theatre Department season

The College of Lake County Theatre Department's 2018-19 season will feature a children's comedy based on a best-selling book series, a groundbreaking drama on the awakening of a Norwegian middle-class wife and mother in the 1870s, a classic Greek tragedy, the annual student showcase and a new musical comedy inspired by "The Addams Family."

• "Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook" at 10 a.m. Thursday and Friday, Sept. 27 and 28; 3 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30. The "world's funniest kid" is back. Junie B. Jones is ecstatic about her new, black, furry mittens, until someone steals them. So, when Junie B. finds a wonderful pen of many colors, she should be allowed to keep it, too, right? • "A Doll's House" by Henrik Ibsen, 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9 and 10, and Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 15-17; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11. In Ibsen's groundbreaking masterwork, Nora Helmer, a young wife and mother, is married to Torvald, a recently promoted bank manager. The pair seem to have an idyllic life until a terrible secret from Nora's past threatens to shatter her world and she begins to question everything.

• "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles, directed by Craig Rich, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2, and Thursday through Saturday, March 7-9; and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 3; with a high school matinee at 10 a.m. Friday, March 8. While his city suffers from plague and ruin, Oedipus stands firm, a proud king who seems to have nothing to fear. Oedipus must solve the mystery of who murdered the previous king to save his city, and he is determined that no one will stand in his way. But, in seeking the truth, his own worst nightmares come to light.

• Play On! A CLC Theatre Student Showcase, 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, April 12-13 and 19-20; and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 14. Play On! is a celebration of student creativity, talent and achievement. Join CLC students as they showcase their abilities as actors, directors, stage managers, designers and technicians. Ideas for the showcase will be solicited in the fall semester and students will produce the work in the spring. It might be a full-length play, an evening of one-acts or even an original script; the students will decide.

• "The Addams Family" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 19 and 20, and Thursday through Saturday, July 25-27; 2 p.m. Sundays, July 21 and 28. In this new musical comedy, Wednesday Addams has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet young man from a "respectable" family. She's confided in her father, and now Gomez Addams must do the unthinkable: keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. The book is by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, based on characters created by Charles Addams.
