Health Department Offers Reduced Water Testing Fee Through September 7

To raise awareness of the importance of groundwater, a valuable natural resource, the Lake County Health Department is offering a reduced water testing fee for homeowners who use well water as their primary drinking water source. The Health Department encourages all users of private wells to have their drinking water tested at least annually to ensure it meets the minimum drinking water standards.

"About 90,000 Lake County residents rely on groundwater to supply their private wells," said Mark Pfister, Executive Director of the Lake County Health Department. "Annual water testing and well maintenance are key to helping prevent waterborne illness."

Between August 27 and September 7, 2018, the normal $18.00 analysis fee for the standard drinking water test will be reduced to $12.00. Sterile test bottles and sampling instructions are available at the Lake County Central Permit Facility, 500 W. Winchester Road, Libertyville; at 3010 Grand Avenue, Waukegan; and at many township and municipal offices throughout Lake County. For a list of locations, call (847) 377-8020, or visit: http://www.lakecountyil.gov/DocumentCenter/View/10074/Water-Sample-Kit-Participants-PDF.

Residents must drop off collected water samples to the Lake County Central Permit Facility between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Results of water samples are ready for homeowners in approximately three business days. If people are uncomfortable collecting these samples themselves, Health Department staff members are available to collect the sample for a $58.00 fee, which also includes an inspection of the well and lab analysis.
