Cantigny retains certification as Audubon sanctuary

Wheaton's Cantigny Park has retained its designation as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program, an Audubon International program.

Participation is designed to help property managers plan, organize, implement and document a comprehensive environmental management program and receive recognition for their efforts.

To reach certification, a property must demonstrate it is maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in several areas, including: environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, outreach and education, water and resource management.

Cantigny Park was designated as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in 2012.

After designation, properties go through a recertification process every three years.

"Cantigny Park has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife," said Christine Kane, CEO at Audubon International.

"The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program benefits both people and wildlife," Kane said. "It's a great way for businesses and environmental organizations to work together to become better stewards of the land and natural resources."

By participating in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program, Cantigny Park has been involved in projects that enhance habitat for wildlife and preserve natural resources for the benefit of the local community.

The projects include conserving energy and reducing waste, using integrated pest management techniques, naturalizing areas, and managing resources in an environmentally responsible manner.

Audubon International is an environmental organization dedicated to educating, assisting and inspiring people from all walks of life to protect and sustain the land, water, wildlife, and natural resources around them.
