Dundee Township Visitor's Center hosts 21st annual Largest Tomato Contest Aug. 25

Gardeners take note, the Dundee Township Visitor's Center, 319 N. River St. in East Dundee, is hosting a Largest Tomato Contest Saturday, Aug. 25.

This is the 21st year for the contest, a special event held each year during the Depot Market.

Tomatoes may be entered between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Aug. 25.

Judging will commence at noon for first-, second- and third-place prizes. Entries are limited to one tomato per family/garden. The contest is held rain or shine under the depot awning.

The contest is sponsored by the Dundee Township Visitor's Center (a.k.a., the Depot), and there is no fee to enter. Tomatoes will be judged by weight and may be red, green or any variation of ripeness in between.

Event organizers have collected hundreds of dollars in prizes from local businesses. First-, second- and third-place prizes will be awarded plus bragging rights.

In addition to the contest, the Depot Market, which takes place each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the depot grounds, will feature a variety of vendors selling locally grown produce, plants, and flowers plus baked goods, honey, jams, collectibles, antiques, jewelry and more.

Run by a volunteer board of directors, the Dundee Township Visitor's Center is a popular stop for bike trail users in need of snacks, beverages, or a restroom. It's also home to the annual Great Pumpkin contest in October.

For information, call Visitor's Center Manager Bill Zelsdorf at (847) 426-4307. The Visitor's Center is also on Facebook as Dundee Depot.
