Community Wide Suicide Awareness and Prevention Event
On Sept. 22, at 7:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Lake Zurich, we are holding a free community wide education event. This program is in conjunction with September being National Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month. The program is being led by licensed professional counselors from the Center for Identity Potential and is designed for teens and adults.
Why is this important to our community?
1. Suicide rates have risen 25% in the last 20 year and in the past decade, the suicide rate for youth 10-17 has increased by more than 70%. (Figures from twloha.com)
2. The Center for Disease Control reports that 121 Americans die by suicide each day.
3. The CDC also reports that more than half of all people who died by suicide did not have a known mental health condition, so there are other risk factors that we need to be aware of.
4. One of five Americans is affected by a mental health condition and there is a societal stigma that exists that makes it hard for them to seek help. (National Alliance on Mental Illness).
5. We can do more, when we improve awareness about problems in our community and work together to pull resources, knowledge and support to make our community healthier.
