Sedgebrook Senior Living Welcomes New Executive Director
Sedgebrook has always been in his sites. Dan Harrington, who has more than 30 years of experience in hospitality, operations and marketing, with the last 17 in senior living, said that he became aware of Sedgebrook retirement community in Lincolnshire when it first broke ground years ago. When the executive director position at Sedgebrook became available, Harrington knew he wanted to join the community. "Sedgebrook has always had a great reputation. I have always wanted to be associated with great teams, and the Sedgebrook team is amazing," he said. Harrington became executive director of Sedgebrook earlier this summer.
Harrington started his career in hospitality and dining management, working in hotels, resorts and upscale dining venues. In 2001, he ventured into senior living. "I loved hospitality but wanted a profession that had a meaningful impact on peoples' lives. In senior living, we're able to do that. The residents I have met over the years are amazing. You meet celebrities in the hospitality industry, but you meet heroes in senior living," he said.
Harrington worked in various management roles in senior living, eventually serving as district director of operations with oversight responsibilities for nine Chicagoland communities. However, missing the daily interaction with residents, he returned to working as an executive director for an area community. He was excited to learn about the open position at Sedgebrook. "Over my career, I have sent many residents to Radford Green rehabilitation and skilled nursing of Sedgebrook. It consistently earns the prestigious five-star rating from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services(CMS) and is repeatedly designated one of the Best Nursing Homes by U.S. News and World. The outcomes that the residents experienced were always top notch. I know that great care doesn't just happen. Knowing that the community provided great care led me to wanting to join the team," he said.
Harrington was further convinced during the extensive interview process. "I thought that the leadership team would ask about my management style and leadership ideas. Instead, they grilled me on the landscape of senior living and major strategy ideas. I was blown away by the forward-thinking team, and remain impressed by the focus on taking Sedgebrook to the next level. The entire staff is warm, caring and compassionate. They all want to be the best. And the longevity here is astonishing. The staff is here for a purpose, and that is to serve our residents and each other," he said.
Service is important to Harrington in more than just his professional life. In his free time, he has been an avid volunteer with Honor Flight Chicago for many years, and also a strong supporter of Misericordia, Heart of Mercy Home in Chicago.
Harrington is a native of Glenview and currently a resident of Arlington Heights.
