Elk Grove Village Youth Police Academy
From July 30 through Aug. 3, the Elk Grove Village Police Department held its first villagewide Youth Police Academy.
The five-day academy was open to residents of Elk Grove Village who were between the ages of 13 and 17. This program provided an opportunity for local teens to learn about law enforcement and develop a partnership with the police department.
Participants who were interested in the profession also gained a better idea of what being a police officer entails.
In the beginning of each week, students were divided into squads that worked together throughout the week as a team. Each squad had the opportunity to learn and get hands-on experience in many areas of policing, such as patrol, the traffic unit, the K-9 unit, and investigations. Additionally, each squad participated in mock interviews, investigations, and traffic accident reconstructions.
At the end of the week, participants graduated in a celebration with Police Chief Chuck Walsh and other members of the police department command staff, enjoying refreshments and cake.
Elk Grove Village hopes that everyone enjoyed their time with the police department and looks forward to hosting future youth police academies.
