League of Women Voters to discuss climate change at kickoff event

The League of Women Voters of Roselle/Bloomingdale will sponsor its annual membership kickoff at a wine tasting and fundraiser.

The event is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Roselle's Lynfred Winery, 15 S. Roselle Road.

The evening will include a presentation from Steve Bogaerts, vice chairman of the Citizens' Climate Lobby, Northwest Suburbs Chapter, a nonprofit, nonpartisan, grass-roots advocacy organization focused on national policies to address climate change.

Bogaerts will lead a discussion on "Engaging the Political Process to Confront Climate Change." He'll explain why the Citizens' Climate Lobby was formed and how it confronts climate change through the political process.

He also will review a national carbon fee and dividend proposal that supporters say promises to reduce carbon emissions to 50 percent of 1990 levels within 20 years while adding jobs.

The cost for the event is $20 and includes wine and hors d'oeuvres. Attendees do not have to become a League member to participate.
