Des Plaines History Center Debuts New Children's Program September 5

The Des Plaines History Center is introducing a new children's program called "Kids Hands-On History." It will take place the first Wednesday and following Sunday of each month from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Each activity will feature a historical lesson accompanied by a craft, art project, or game. The program will debut Wednesday, September 5 and repeat Sunday, September 9. The topic will be the 200th birthday of Illinois achieving statehood.

"Kids Hands-On History" program is designed to invite family participation and discussion on a broad range of historical topics per the History Center's mission. All children ages 5 to 12 and their families are invited to attend.

Interpretive Curator Emma Marston discusses the first activity in the program series:

"History is so much more than just facts in a book, and Illinois' bicentennial birthday this year is a great opportunity to explore our state's rich history in an interactive and engaging way. Illinois is home to so many amazing people, places, and things, from the prairies to the world's first Ferris Wheel to four former presidents, and this will be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to celebrate our state's heritage!"

Children ages 5 to 12 with an adult are invited to attend. Cost of attendance is $2.00 for History Center members and $3.00 for History Center non-members. The History Center is located at 781 Pearson Street, Des Plaines, IL 60016. Our next "Kids' Hands-On History" program will be Wednesday, October 3 and Sunday, October 7 from 1:00pm-3:00pm. Children are invited to come learn about the history and culture of American Sign Language (ASL).
