ESO ensemble to present free children's concert Aug. 14 at Geneva library

The Elgin Symphony Orchestra Woodwind Quintet will present Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the Geneva Public Library, 127 James St.

This free program is for children up to fifth grade and their families. "Peter and the Wolf" is a symphonic fairy tale that is told by a narrator and illustrated by music. The ensemble shows off the variety of instruments that make up the quintet, and each one plays a different character in the story.

The ESO Woodwind Quintet is comprised of Jean Bishop, flute; Kathy Pirtle, clarinet; Debra Freedland, oboe; Sharon Jones, horn and Vince Disantis, bassoon. Carol Dylan will be the narrator. Seating is limited. To reserve your free tickets, contact the library at (630) 232-0780 or visit geneva.libnet.info. To learn more about the ESO, visit ElginSymphony.org.

ESO musicians want to tell a story, and can bring a performance adventure to your school or library.

ESO Traveling Ensemble programs reinforce the goals for Illinois Learning Standards in the Fine Arts. Many current academic studies reinforce the theory that listening to and studying music develop the ability to think creatively. Schools with strong music programs and commitment to the arts have higher rates of graduation and better standardized test scores.

To engage an ESO Traveling Ensemble to perform at your school or library, contact Wendy Evans, director of community engagement and orchestra personnel, at w.evans@elginsymphony.org or (847) 888-0404, ext. 238.
