ACS Breast cancer kickoff events, walks happening across Illinois

American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 2018 event registration is open, and kickoff events are happening across Illinois and the nation. All who are interested in "YOUniting" to conquer breast cancer and learning more about the inspiring, noncompetitive walks are encouraged to attend.

Those who register for a Making Strides walk and raise $25 online in August will receive their choice of a pink YOUnited™ cape or bandana, while supplies last. The pink gear is a visible way for participants to show their support of Making Strides, a key source of support for the American Cancer Society's efforts to reduce the impact of breast cancer. The opportunity for pink gear ends Sept. 5 at noon CDT; however, event registration will remain open.

There will be 11 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events across Illinois this year, with kickoffs happening in August, and walks from the end of September through the entire month of October. To inquire about sponsorship, register for an event, or obtain additional information, visit MakingStridesWalk.org/Chicagoland, or call or live chat the American Cancer Society any time at 1-800-227-2345 or cancer.org.

"Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events are fun and inspiring gatherings where thousands of people - individuals, families, friends, colleagues - come together to celebrate life, honor loved ones lost, and fuel research, programs and services," said Peter J. Steele, Illinois executive director of the American Cancer Society. "The funds raised allow us to be there at every phase, from research to education, prevention to diagnosis, and treatment to recovery."

An estimated 268,670 new cases of breast cancer will be newly diagnosed in the U.S. this year. Across the country, more than 1 million people will participate in approximately 200 Making Strides events, which aim to raise $60 million dollars for breast cancer research, and essential programs and services for patients and their families.
