DuPage Foundation awards scholarships

The DuPage Medical Society Foundation board of trustees announces the awarding of eight 2018 student scholarships.

Michael R. Brancato of Naperville is the recipient of the prestigious James P. Campbell, M.D., Memorial Scholarship.

Michael stood out for his academic ability as he is enrolled in a 6-year combined BA/M.D. program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Even in high school Michael was able to secure his first research internship with a neurologist. He received research training with Michael Rezak, M.D., Ph.D., at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, who shared a life-changing observation with him: "When you see the suffering in the later stages of disease, you realize palliative measures just aren't enough. Research is the way to help."

The James P. Campbell, M.D., Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 to honor the memory of a distinguished DuPage County physician who for 60 years was also a great advocate for organized medicine. He served the DuPage County Medical Society and other branches of organized medicine in many ways, but most significantly as the Society's secretary-treasurer for 29 years. Recipients of the James P. Campbell, M.D., Memorial Scholarship exhibit an outstanding academic background and extraordinary potential for a future in medicine.

Andrew Tran of Glen Ellyn has been awarded the 2018 William B. Frymark, M.D., Honorary Scholarship.

Andrew is entering his second year of medical school student at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. Along with outstanding academic ability, his career aspirations are to be an academic physician specializing in radiation oncology.

"I have found this field to be both stimulating and humbling, and I want to dedicate my time to helping patients battle cancer and overseeing their treatment," he said. He aspires to not only practice medicine, but to teach the next generation of physicians and make contributions to the field of medicine through research.

The William B. Frymark, MD, Honorary Scholarship is a tribute to one of the Foundation's founders who, in the ensuing half century, remained a dedicated supporter and steward of the organization. Doctor Frymark served many terms as a trustee and president of the Foundation's Board and also held many leadership positions with the DuPage County Medical Society. Recipients of the William B. Frymark, MD, Honorary Scholarship demonstrate superior academic ability, a commitment to service, and great potential as a health care service provider.

Other 2018 scholarship recipients are as follows:

• Laura E. Burns, Naperville, medicine

• Oliver Dela Rosa, Naperville, occupational therapy

• Kathryn McLeland, West Chicago, physical therapy

• Nathaniel Moxon, Naperville, medicine

• Chirag Patel, Carol Stream, medicine

• Luis Rubio, West Chicago, medicine

"Once again, we had an outstanding group of student applicants" said Foundation president, Lanny F. Wilson, M.D. "Out of respect and appreciation for our generous donors, the Foundation takes seriously the evaluation of each candidate based upon

needs and merits. In so doing, we hope to steward our philanthropic resources wisely as we support future health professionals and the future of health care in America."

Each year the DuPage Medical Society Foundation awards 100 percent of the funds received from contributors. Including this year's grants, the foundation has awarded over $393,500 in student scholarships.
