CLC announces Lakeshore Commitment campaign
The College of Lake County's Lakeshore Campus in Waukegan is providing more courses than ever, guaranteed course offerings, a wider selection of starting times and a stronger emphasis on helping students progress to graduation. It's all part a of a new campaign known as the Lakeshore Commitment, a redoubling of efforts for students to have Lakeshore as their one-stop source for education.
Lakeshore is committing to 26 classroom-based courses this fall, helping students to satisfy their general education requirements for a career or transfer program. The courses range from English Composition I and Introduction to Psychology to Principles of Biology.
"The core courses are guaranteed to run each semester, and a student can take a full-time load of classes at Lakeshore," said Interim Dean Derrick Harden. "Lakeshore offers all the courses needed for an A.A. transfer degree, an A.A.S. in either dental hygiene or medical assisting as well as a phlebotomy certificate. We're also offering a variety of class starting times to meet the needs of students who are juggling courses with work or family commitments."
Regardless of major, CLC students and graduates are quick to point out Lakeshore's friendly, supportive atmosphere. Ikeisha Young, a nursing major who graduated with an A.A. in May, said the free tutoring helped her with writing, math and biology courses. Young also liked the variety of courses and times that allowed her to take morning classes while her children were enrolled in school.
Additionally, the campus offers a full range of services, including enrollment assistance, financial aid, academic and career planning advice as well as academic support. The campus also has a nationally accredited Children's Learning Center, in which children learn and play in a modern, secure setting, taught by child care professionals. "There are great services available at Lakeshore, more than many students realize, and with the Children's Learning Center right here, it's a very family-friendly environment," said Young, a North Chicago resident who plans to transfer to Chicago State University this fall.
Harden added, "We're here for all Lake County residents, and those in the northeastern part of the county especially appreciate the campus' location in downtown Waukegan. "It's easily accessible by car, bus, bike, train or on foot. What's more, the campus is a community hub, with events ranging from job fairs to concerts such as Salute to Gospel. And when the $48 million expansion is complete in 2022, the campus will offer expanded services, from and enrollment center to adult education to job placement."
