CLC offers semester-long study opportunity in China
College students can experience Chinese culture, make new friends and earn 12 or more college credits in the College of Lake County's semester abroad in Kunming, China, from Feb. 20 to June 23, 2019.
The venture is offered at a special rate to the first 20 students to apply and be accepted into the program.
Students will take classes at Yunnan University, one of the largest and most prestigious universities in China, said Liliana Ware, CLC academic operations manager.
Required courses include History of Chinese Culture and Society and Introduction to East Asian Civilization, available in English. Elective courses include Chinese language and two other courses: International Relations and American National Politics.
"Kunming is called the 'City of Eternal Spring' because it has a warmer and much milder climate than most other Chinese cities," Ware said.
"Students live in international housing on the beautiful university campus close to many cultural sites and attractions. There are also good and affordable places to eat near the campus. Housing is near quaint, old neighborhoods as well as modern shopping areas, and students will be accompanied by a CLC faculty member."
The cost, $4,995 for each of the first 20 students to be accepted into the program and $6,725 for each student thereafter, includes: tuition for 12 or more credits, international airfare, visa for China, selected cultural excursions, shared lodging and travel insurance. The cost does not include meals, personal spending or passport fees.
One CLC graduate who found the trip rewarding is Bernard Kondenar, an Antioch resident. He spent the 2017 fall semester in China before graduating in May with an A.A.S. in sustainable agriculture and horticulture production, in addition to an Associate in Arts degree.
"I visited the tombs and palaces of the ancient emperors, bathed in the hot springs of sacred mountains and even learned to recite a little Chinese poetry," said Kondenar, who plans to transfer to Lake Forest College in the fall and major in environmental science.
"I am truly grateful to CLC for making this most gratifying and enriching experience possible."
