Sharpen skills at Schaumburg library's business, career programs

If you're looking for a job, considering a career change, or working hard to improve your business, check out the valuable resources and programs available at the Schaumburg Township District Library. With locations in Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates and Hanover Park, the library is convenient for anyone in Schaumburg Township. Additionally, entrepreneurs with businesses in the library's service area are eligible for an STDL card - a key to using the library's selection of resources and databases. But even without a library card, jobseekers and business owners are welcome to take advantage of the following opportunities.

• Power Employment: There may be heavy competition for the jobs you want, but attending Power Employment can give you an edge. Sign up and let professionals from Illinois workNet offer guidance that could help you nail the next interview.

• QuickBooks: For those who own a business and could use some help with accounting, the library will offer SCORE: Intro to QuickBooks, from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, in the Rasmussen South Room. QuickBooks is an accounting software package with products geared mainly toward small and medium-sized businesses. It offers accounting applications as well as cloud-based versions that accept business payments, manage and pay bills, and payroll functions. SCORE presenter Joel Shabsin will explain what QuickBooks can do and the steps required to set up and implement this accounting software.

Photos will be taken in front of a backdrop and delivered via email following the program.

• Preventing Hackers: Ignorance can make businesses an easy target for hackers. Business owners will gain valuable insight from presenter Mark Lieberman during SCORE: Stop Hackers Before They Stop You, from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27, in the Rasmussen South Room. Attendees will learn about hackers' tools and motives, and how to keep a business off a hacker's radar.

• Social Media: How can jobseekers pair up LinkedIn and Twitter to maximize the chance of success? Find out from presenter Bruce Bixler during LinkedIn & Twitter for Job Seekers from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, in the Rasmussen South Room. Learn how to use these services together for the biggest impact.

• Modern Job Searching: CareerPlace Director Lenny Harris will share the best way to land a job in today's economy during Job Searching in the 21st Century from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, in the Rasmussen South Room. Find out what has changed, and what has not, in regard to employment.

• Resume Writing: Job seekers will learn savvy tricks for getting their resumes noticed during Target Resume Workshop from 1-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Hanover Park Branch, 1266 Irving Park Road and Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Hoffman Estates Branch, 1550 Hassell Road. Participants will discover key words that draw attention to resumes and much more. This is a hands-on class, so participants should bring their resume on a USB stick in order to edit it during the class. It would also be beneficial to bring a job posting that aligns with your resume.

"We offer an abundance of current sources to boost jobseekers with their career transition, and launch or strengthen small businesses," said Business Liaison librarian Patti Smolin. "Our greatest assets are our experienced reference librarians who can help patrons find and apply these tools to key areas."
