MCC Math Refresher courses aim to help students

New and dual-credit students at McHenry County College who take a Math Refresher seminar this summer before taking the math placement exam could save more than $1,600 in tuition and books and a full year of time progressing toward a degree, instead of taking developmental math.

MCC's free monthly math refresher courses include review of Elementary Algebra (MAT 095) and Intermediate Algebra (MAT 099) and could help students score higher on the math placement exam. Students who pass the math placement exam can place into college-level math classes without having to spend time and money on developmental math courses.

Those who have already taken algebra, but need a brush up, are also welcome to attend one of the four-hour seminars.

"Most students attending one of these four-hour sessions scored higher on their placement test," said Bob Reass, math specialist at MCC. "Some were able to place two levels higher," he added.

The Elementary Algebra (MAT 095) upcoming review sessions are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 28, in Room E221 and from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7 in Room A211.

The Intermediate Algebra (MAT 099) review sessions are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, in Room E221 and 5:30 50 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9 in Room A211.

Registration is not required. Participants may sign in upon arrival. Students may enter the door to the atrium in Building A.
