Cancer Survivors Program Reflects Family - and Community - Commitment

(May 30, 2018) The 22nd annual Myra Rubenstein Weis (MRW) Benefit Committee Luncheon successfully honored its mission of funding wellness and education for NorthShore University HealthSystem patients. Amidst the unparalleled support of other NorthShore programs, even more notable is that the total pledged support of the MRW Benefit Committee to NorthShore's LIFE Program has now reached $1 million. In recognition of this unwavering support, NorthShore announced that the LIFE program will now be referred to as the "Myra Rubenstein Weis LIFE Cancer Survivorship Program."

"We are so thankful to the MRW Benefit Committee, and its community of supporters, for their generosity and dedication for more than two decades. Their commitment to this program and to the thousands of patients they have touched will be recognized for years to come. It seems only appropriate to express our appreciation by naming the program after Myra Rubenstein Weis, whose legacy continues to live on," explains Carol Rosenberg, MD, Director of LIFE Program.

Eileen and Paul Goldstein, MD, of Highland Park, have led the MRW Committee through its successes. "Our family, friends and community have been so supportive of our efforts. It takes hard work, time and dedication to succeed, but we are proud of our family's ability to come together to honor my sister, and to help so many who are celebrating cancer survivorship," says Eileen Goldstein.

Event honoree Jesse Peterson Hall commemorated NorthShore Highland Park Hospital's 100th anniversary. With more than a decade of experience as a hospital executive at NorthShore, Jesse was most recently named President of Glenbrook Hospital and Gabrielle Cummings has been named President of Highland Park Hospital.

Since 2006, the Benefit has funded the Living in the Future (LIFE) Cancer Survivorship Program, including sponsorship of the Myra Rubenstein Weis Cancer Survivorship Seminars. The free educational lectures are open to the public and include topics of importance to cancer survivors, including nutrition, exercise and genetics. In addition to the LIFE Program, funds raised from the Luncheon will support an innovative pilot project that will educate the next generation about personalized medicine and how genomics is transforming healthcare. Funds also support the Myra Rubenstein Weis Health Resource Center, which is dedicated to promoting health education and awareness to the communities served by Highland Park Hospital and NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore).
