Annual clay shoot June 8 to benefit veterans

On Friday, June 8, the Allen J. Lynch Medal of Honor Veteran's Assistance Program (a program of Operation Support Our Troops-America) will host its fifth annual Clay Shoot fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the private Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation, 14N322 Route 25 in East Dundee.

It is a fun, but challenging 14-station circuit of sporting clays, plus available "Long Bird Challenge" and "Annie Oakley" competitions.

The Veteran's Assistance Program's mission is to offer temporary assistance and relief to veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces and their immediate family members.

The price is $250 for shooters; $150 for nonshooters. Sign up for the "2018 Annual Sporting Clays Fundraiser" on Eventbrite.com by Thursday, June 7; online fees apply.

The foundation, founded in 2012, provides grants to veterans who are in need of financial assistance.

In general, veterans or their dependents will receive a one-time grant to assist in overcoming financial needs.

The foundation provides a wide range of grant assistance; including but not limited to rent, temporary housing, medical expenses and auto payment. All funds are paid directly to creditors or service providers. They do not pay grants directly to applicants.

Allen J. Lynch has spent his entire life serving his fellow veterans with the federal Veterans Affairs as well as the Illinois state government veterans department. He also served with the U.S. Army Reserve and the Illinois National Guard until reaching mandatory retirement.

Lynch served with Company D, 1st Battalion of the 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) from May 31, 1967 until June 1, 1968. He had been "in-country" for six months when the action took place that would result in his receiving the Medal of Honor. The recognition of his conspicuous gallantry and selfless service to others on that day would be the catalyst for a life of service to others.
