Trinity's new Access Program supports students with autism spectrum disorder

Trinity International University has launched the Access Program, designed to provide enhanced learning opportunities and educational support to young adults with autism spectrum disorder.

The Access Program will provide one-on-one mentoring sessions, a weekly support group tasked with developing tools for daily living and social skills, regularly scheduled study sessions that model a positive academic work environment, and social events that will encourage an active campus life.

"We want to provide academic opportunities for students who learn in different ways," vice president for Academic Administration Tom Cornman said. "We are not aware of any other schools within the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities that are providing such a pathway to baccalaureate degrees for students with disabilities."

"The numbers are staggeringly low for students with high-incidence disabilities to complete a bachelor's degree," assistant professor of Education Ruby Owiny said. "We are hopeful that the support provided through the Access Program will give these students the opportunity to successfully complete their degrees here at TIU."

Many see the new program as a natural progression for Trinity, which has a longstanding reputation for helping all students discover strengths.

"We are good at helping students identify their potential," director of Undergraduate Admissions Jordan Bryant said. "This existing expertise at Trinity fits well with the new Access Program."

Students who enter the Access Program first must submit a standard application for admission to Trinity International University. Once accepted, they apply separately for admission to the Access Program. Participation in the program can last for up to three semesters, although most students will finish in one academic year.

Access Program participants will pay an additional $2,000 per semester to offset the costs of providing qualified mentors. Students gain acceptance on a rolling basis. Program size in the first year will be limited, so interested students should apply immediately.
