ECC to offer 16-week personal training certificate this fall

Elgin Community College's Health and Wellness Management program will begin offering a 10-credit hour Personal Training certificate during the upcoming fall 2018 semester.

The certificate can be completed in 16 weeks (one semester) and prepares students for the certified personal trainer exam with the American College of Sports Medicine.

Class times are scheduled in the late afternoons Monday through Thursday, at the college's Spartan Drive campus, to accommodate prospective students who work.

A certificate in personal training from ECC will allow to students to become employed as a personal trainer and safely and effectively provide personal training to their clients. It is stackable, which makes it easy for students to continue on in pursuing the associate of applied science degree within health and wellness management.

"ECC's personal training certificate program focuses on providing students the knowledge and practical skills needed to work in a variety of fitness environments as a certified personal trainer," said Lurana Bain, director of ECC's Health and Wellness Management Program. "Our personal training classes offer individualized attention with hands-on learning experiences. Students complete the program ready to enter the field as well-rounded, experienced professionals."

According to predictions from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for fitness trainers and instructors should increase 10 percent from 2016 to 2026, which is faster than the average for all occupations. Personal training can be a rewarding career for individuals that want to help people look and feel their best, enjoy working out, or seek a career with a flexible work schedule.

ECC's Health and Wellness Management program provides a solid knowledge base in anatomy, exercise science and kinesiology, and also offers many hands-on experiences designed to enhance each student's practical skills.

Required courses for certificate completion include: Introduction to Health and Wellness (HWM-100); Group Fitness I (HWM-132); Personal Training I (HWM-147); and Personal Training II (HWM 148).

Registration for fall 2018 is now open. Students who are new to ECC can learn about the application process by visiting elgin.edu/apply.
