College of Lake County elects Board of Trustee officers for 2018-19
The College of Lake County Board of Trustees named officers for the 2018-19 academic year and recognized outgoing Interim President Dr. Rich Haney at its April 24 meeting.
Richard A. Anderson of Grayslake will continue as board chair. Catherine M. Finger, Ed.D., will serve another year as vice chair and Barbara D. Oilschlager will continue as secretary. Kirk (Max) Burns of Lindenhurst was seated as the 2018-19 student trustee.
The board also recognized Dr. Haney for his 19 years of service to CLC. His tenure has included many leadership roles, including dean of Business and Industry Services, assistant vice president for Educational Affairs, vice president for Educational Affairs, provost and, since 2017, interim president.
"Dr. Haney's strategic guidance has led the college to achieve key milestones, including multiple, successful reaffirmations of accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission, a reallocation of resources to focus on student success and an expansion of international education opportunities," the resolution, read by Chair Anderson, stated.
Dr. Haney said, "Thank you to the board. You have always supported me and have been great to work for. Any success I've had at the college is because of great faculty and staff whose top priority are the students."
Succeeding Dr. Haney is incoming President Dr. Lori Suddick, who attended the meeting and will begin officially May 1.
The board also passed a resolution expressing appreciation for outgoing Student Trustee Hansel Lopez. He also was a Student Government Association senator and then president in 2016-17. Additionally, he was treasurer of the Latino Alliance Club and member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Lopez, who will graduate with an A.S. in May, plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the fall to pursue a degree in aerospace engineering with a minor in business. His successor, Burns, graduated from Lakes Community High School and is a transfer student from Indiana University.

Library renovation, bike-trail easement approved
The board also approved a $6 million renovation of the Grayslake Campus' library. The project, covering about 50,000 square feet, includes new lighting and heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Other improvements include new ceilings, fire safety, carpeting and furniture, all designed to modernize and enhance student services.
In addition, the board approved an additional permanent easement to continue a bike path on Washington Street near the Grayslake Campus. The path would extend from Lancer Lane into Gurnee. It is designed to help faculty, staff and students ride their bicycles to the college and link the college's existing trails to other county trails.
