See life in Civil War era at Living History Open House April 22

Step back in time to the 1850s and Civil War era at McHenry County Conservation District's Living History Open House from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 22, at Glacial Park's Powers-Walker House Historic Landmark, Route 31 and Harts Road in Ringwood.

Volunteers in historical attire will be on hand to answer questions, offer tours and demonstrate skills appropriate to the season.

April's open house will focus on the two sons from the Powers family and their contributions to the Civil War; mounted Civil War re-enactors will be on hand to share stories and practice their cavalry course; a special presentation is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Be sure to take advantage of the first opportunity of the season to tour the historic farmhouse, which is open to the public only a handful of times a year.

"There are always changes to the house with the ongoing restoration," says Gail Brown, volunteer restoration coordinator, "We have been busy spring cleaning to get this wonderful historic home ready to share with you. Come on by and see what is new … or old."
