April 27-28: CLC presents 20th Fear No Art festival

Dance, music, poetry and art collide at the 20th Annual Fear No Art festival presented by the College of Lake County at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 28, in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts, 19351 W. Washington St., Grayslake.

Fear No Art will include original choreography by CLC dance students, set to music composed by artists such as Lauren Daigle, Bob Dylan, Radiohead, Whitney Woerz and Led Zeppelin. The show also will include a classical piano performance and original music and poetry created and performed by CLC students.

Community members performing include 10-year-old John Stahl of Round Lake, who will perform a contemporary dance to "Whatever it Takes," by Imagine Dragons.

"Our priority is to feature CLC students and adult community members, but John did a great job in his audition," said Valerie Alpert, artistic director and dance instructor, noting that Stahl is the youngest ever to perform in Fear No Art. "His choreography and originality were impressive, and maybe he'll inspire other kids."

Participating choreographers include: Rachel Buehrer, Josa Comstock, Alana Johnson, Lamaiya Lancaster Carrie Patterson, Mallory Rubin, John Stahl and Niya Thompkins.

Performing dancers include: Isabela Algara, Marissa Barnette, Mooky Braxton, Brooke Buchtenkirch, Deek Buckins, Rachel Buehrer, Josa Comstock, Stefanie Krammer, Lamaiya Lancaster, Diana Lu, Dalis McGreevy, Kelsey Minden, Becka Nieder, Felicity Nicholson, Mallory Rubin, Debora Schneider-Borges, Frances Skurski, Sabrina Soto, John Stahl, Niya Thompkins and the Trifecta Dance Collective.

Eight visual artists will display their work: Francisco Alfaro (digital art and traditional art); Marissa Barnette (graphite, charcoals, paints, chalks, crayons, colored pencil and photography); Courtney Mensah (photography); Diego Morales (pen and ink); KC Phelan (colored pencil/ink pen); Alma Salgado (charcoal, pastel drawings, ink pen drawings, painting); Xavier Villarreal (digital photography); and Lucinda Vistain (2D animation).

The production team includes artistic director Valerie Alpert, stage manager Matthew Bearor, technical coordinator Jeremy Eiden, sound engineer Brian Scocchera and lighting designer Jesse Klug.

"The goal of this year's Fear No Art is to have the artists see how their work can grow when they collaborate with others, such as a singer working with a visual artist to influence the messaging and performance," Alpert said. "My hope is that the arts continue to support each other in order to foster an appreciation across all art forms throughout our community."
