Head to Glen Ellyn's Bike Rodeo May 6

Bike safety is something that all children should learn. While riding a bike offers a fun experience, a terrific mode of transportation, and valuable exercise, it's important for riders of all ages to follow the rules of the road and to understand how to ride safely.

The Glen Ellyn Park District is partnering with the Glen Ellyn Public Library, Glen Ellyn Police Department, Northwestern Medicine, and The Bike Hub to promote bike safety for residents of Glen Ellyn and the surrounding communities.

They will work together to host the Glen Ellyn Bike Rodeo from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, May 6, at the Duane/Lorraine parking lot next to the public library. The area is reachable from the Prairie Path for participants planning to ride their bikes to the rodeo.

There is no cost to attend this new event. Kids should bring their bikes and helmet, and should come with a parent or guardian. Upon arrival, check in with the Glen Ellyn Park District.

The Glen Ellyn Police Department will be offering bike registrations, where they'll create an ID number to keep on file at the police department, along with the bike's make and model information. In the event of a stolen (or otherwise missing) bike, the information will be available to match a recovered bike with its owner.

The Glen Ellyn Public Library will offer a bike-decorating station and an opportunity to jazz up your bike helmet, and The Bike Hub will offer check-ups to determine that your bicycle's brakes, tires, handlebars, and other parts are working as they should. Northwestern Medicine will be on site to assist with helmet fittings and provide safety demonstration. Several bicycles will be raffled off including a Strider bike, 16-inch training wheel bike, and 20-inch neighborhood bike, with lucky winners taking home a new ride.

Participants can try out the new safety course to practice stopping, turning, and riding comfortably. They'll also learn about riding on the sidewalk, crossing streets, and crossing at railroad crossings.

The event is offered in a drop-in format, so participants can come and go anytime between noon and 2 p.m. There will be lots of open space for a picnic lunch. Be advised the event is "weather-permitting"; check the rainout hotline at (630) 984-5075 or www.gepark.org/weather for updated information.
