April 19 and 26: CLC literary publications to hold readings/receptions

The literary arts are thriving at College of Lake County, and to celebrate the writing and artistic talents represented in CLC's two award-winning annual literary publications, "Willow Review" and "Prairie Voices," readings will take place April 19 and 26. Additionally, the college will celebrate William Shakespeare's birthday April 26.

All events are free and open to the public and will be held at the Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St. Copies of the new literary magazines will be available for sale at the readings or Lancer Book Stop stores.

On Thursday, April 19 at 7 p.m., the "Willow Review" literary magazine will hold a reading and reception in Room A013. Contributors to the award-winning literary magazine will read from their original poetry and prose. "Willow Review" editors selected four of 25 writers for $100 cash awards in poetry. The 2018 prizes were awarded to James B. Nicola, Sister Lou Ella Hickman, I.W.B.S., Gaylord Brewer and Andy Roberts. Partially funded by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency, its editor is Michael Latza, CLC English professor.

From 6-9 p.m. Thursday, April 26 in Room A013, "Prairie Voices," CLC's student literary/art journal, will host a reading and reception honoring students whose work was published. The 2018 issue includes 96 pages of short stories, essays and poems from 29 writers and visual art by 20 students.

"Many of these students are published for the very first time and have chosen thought-provoking themes to explore," said Dr. Nicholas Schevera, CLC English professor and editor. Themes in the 96-page book include lost love, childhood books, job difficulties and achieving redemption. The 2017 edition of "Prairie Voices" won first place (central division) in the Community College Humanities Association Annual Literary Magazine Contest. It also won first place in 2016 and 2014. Robert Lossmann, CLC art professor, is the art editor of the publication, designed by Elaine Lazarus, CLC graphic designer.

Also on Thursday, April 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Commons, CLC's Literary Arts Society will celebrate Shakespeare's Birthday Bash. Students and community members are welcome to perform scenes from Shakespearean plays or poems.
