Immanuel teams end successful winter sports season

Winter is a busy time at Immanuel Lutheran School in Batavia. In addition to participating in academic contests such as the National Geographic Geography Bee and the Scripps National Spelling Bee, basketball and cheer team competitions highlight the season.

The Immanuel girls' varsity basketball team participated in its eighth consecutive appearance at the Lutheran Sport Association of Illinois Grade School Basketball State Tournament held last weekend. The team ended their season on Saturday morning in a hard fought game against Trinity Lutheran School in Springfield, Illinois.

During the regular season, coaches Steve Mudd and Sharon Dalpini reached 300 wins coaching varsity girls' basketball at Immanuel Lutheran School. The first came on Feb. 28, 2002, with a 16-13 win over Cross Lutheran School in Yorkville. The 300th victory came at the Zion Lutheran Tournament in Marengo on Saturday, Feb. 3, with a 22-14 win over St. Peter Lutheran School in Arlington Heights. Sharon, Immanuel's athletic director, and volunteer Steve Mudd have coached girls' varsity for 17 seasons.

In addition to a winning season, Immanuel's varsity boys' basketball team earned the prestigious Christian Leadership Award at Christ Lutheran School in Peoria Feb. 16-18 for their excellent display of teamwork, sportsmanship, and Christian character during their tournament.

Immanuel's junior varsity boys ended their season with a third-place finish at the St. Paul Lutheran School basketball tournament two weeks ago in Rochelle. Girls' junior varsity enjoyed a fun season improving their skills and learning that heart is one of the most important aspects of the game.

Immanuel's cheer team participated in the Lutheran Sports Association Cheer Team Competition at Concordia University-Chicago. The cheer team began practicing their routine last August and learned quite a lot about this level of competition. The team came in seventh place at the competition.

These sports will be celebrated at the Winter Sports Celebration scheduled for next week at Immanuel Lutheran School.
