Prince of Peace UMC of Elk Grove Receives United Methodist Grant

Members of Prince of Peace United Methodist Church traveled to the Chicago Temple Jan. 17 for the United Methodist Foundation grant celebration.

Prince of Peace was one of 15 organizations to receive a grant to assist with a local ministry.

The Rev. Cerna Castro Rand applied for the grant to assist with the Food for Kids outreach program the church initiated in September, 2017.

Each month during the school year, there is a long weekend or break period when students are not in school to receive a free breakfast and lunch. For these long weekends and breaks, Prince of Peace provides a backpack full of food for families whose students come from low-income families and attend the local public school.

The students return the empty backpacks when they get back to school after the break so they are ready to be filled again the following month.

The United Methodist Foundation awarded a $1,500 grant to help Prince pf Peace sustain and grow this program. The Food for Kids program has touched the lives of the students, their families and the volunteers who coordinate the purchasing of food and the filling of the backpacks.
