Mount Prospect Announces New Textile Recycling Program

The Village of Mount Prospect has announced that it has partnered with Simple Recycling to offer residents an effective and innovative way to recycle used clothing through a new textile recycling program. Simple Recycling is a free weekly pickup service offered to residents and no enrollment is necessary.

The textile recycling program provides residents with a convenient solution to help dramatically reduce the harmful impact of textile waste. Proactive efforts to recycle clothing, shoes and accessories today can have the same impact as removing millions of cars from the nation's roads. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 85% of all clothing ends up in the landfill with only 15% being donated. For those residents that traditionally donate clothing to charities, the Village and Simple Recycling encourage them to continue to do so.

To kick start the program, Simple Recycling mailed bags to all single family homes. Residents can set the bags at the curb for collection on their regular refuse collection day and the driver will leave replacement bags behind. Additional bags are available at the Public Works Department (1700 W. Central Road), Monday - Friday 7:30am - 5:00pm; or through Simple Recycling online at http://simplerecycling.com/bag-request/.

For more information about the textile recycling program, please visit the village's website, http://www.mountprospect.org/textilerecycling or contact the Public Works Department at (847) 870-5640.
