Glen Ellyn library to host annual Teen Scene Art Contest

Local high school students can show off their artistic talent and see their artwork displayed at the Glen Ellyn Public Library as part of the fourth annual Teen Scene Art Contest and artist's reception. Contest submissions will be accepted through Feb. 11.

"We want to celebrate local high school artists," said Josh O'Shea, young adult librarian at the Glen Ellyn Public Library. "The gallery and reception are a way for the library to say, 'this is your space, too, and we want to highlight your creativity and hard work.'"

Students at Glenbard West or Glenbard South and Glen Ellyn residents in high school or home-school between the ages of 14-18 are eligible to enter the contest. Students can submit original, visual artwork in any of the three contest categories: digital/film photography or graphic art, ceramics or sculpture, and painting or drawing.

Judges will pick first-, second- and third-place winners in each category.

All submissions will be displayed at an artist's reception from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, at the library, 400 Duane St. To further celebrate local high school artists, a slideshow spotlighting each artist's work will play throughout the reception. All artists and community members are encouraged to attend with their friends and family.

O'Shea said he is excited to provide an opportunity to showcase the talent of local high schoolers. "Looking at their work, one can see time, dedication, and passion," he said.

Artists may choose to leave their artwork for inclusion in the March "Artist of the Month" display at the library. The nine winners will be featured on the library's Teen Scene Art Contest webpage and will have framed photos of their artwork displayed in the high school room through the end of the year.

Winners will be announced March 16 via The Teen Scene's Instagram and Twitter accounts, as well as on the GEPL Teen Scene Art Contest webpage. All winners will receive a Blick Art Materials gift card.

Said O'Shea, "I'm excited to reach out to new and returning participants for another successful celebration of Glen Ellyn's teen art talent in 2018!"
